Massachusetts Retirement Community
Introduction to retirement living

The Sudbury River meanders through one of the most scenic and accessible sections of New England - Metrowest Boston. And living near the center of this bucolic area, halfway between downtown Boston and Worcester, many residents in our "Meadows" apartments enjoy the beautiful landscaped grounds and country surroundings. There is even a family of protected white deer, which frequently visits from the adjacent state park.

One of the most dramatic changes in Boston area assisted living in recent years has been the greatly increasing numbers of seniors who are foregoing moving to Florida, or who are returning to their local roots. In many cases they just want to be nearer to that familiar New England way of life. Certainly also it seems that more and more are returning to be closer to their children, grandchildren and other family members and close friends.

As we live longer, and as baby boomers are now reaching retirement age, the availability of the right accommodations for new enrollments will likely become more difficult. A key attraction for the 159 independent living units of The Meadows Apartments, at New Horizons in Marlborough, is the priority access they receive to higher levels of service if Meadows residents later need more help with the activities of daily living.

"Meadows Estates" is part of one of Boston's finest independent and assisted living retirement communities (CCRCs). Only 13 miles west of I-95, Boston's main circumferential highway, New Horizons Retirement Community is just north of U.S. Route 20, in Marlborough, MA. Come and visit this wonderful friendly place, where more than 400 seniors already enjoy good living. Serving Concord, Sudbury, Marlborough and Framingham areas.

There are very few things more important to the full enjoyment of our retirement years than good health, companionship, and comfort in the place we choose to live. Better Massachusetts retirement communities such as The Meadows offer a country inn-like atmosphere at a cost that is typically much less than the cost of living alone in a home. It is also among the lowest cost, high-quality senior housing in Massachusetts.

Both Meadows apartment buildings for seniors in MA are designed for the fully independent active senior. Sharing a beautiful 40-acre campus immediately adjacent to New Horizons, and surrounded by more than 100 acres of wooded conservation land, these spacious one and two bedroom units include generous common areas, in-unit washer / dryers, fully applianced kitchens, and large tiled baths.

Every day, the choices we make determine the quality of our lives. As we grow older, it is often desirable to alter our housing arrangements while adapting to our changing circumstances. Locating a Massachusetts retirement community that provides a caring, convenient environment, and meets our personal needs, becomes more important with each passing year.

The Meadows is so much more than a housing development for seniors. Instead, it is a beautiful community where programs, recreation, and services are designed specifically for individuals. Our large indoor heated swimming pool is only one of the many features which so many residents use to maintain their vitality and their interest in continuing to live a full daily life. Living here will enable many to age-in-place and postpone or avoid altogether any need to move in with family members or to a nursing home in later years.

Continuing Care Boston Retirement Community

This Boston area retirement community is proud to offer a very attractive living arrangement for active individuals or couples who still want to live completely on their own, but who want the convenience of knowing that help is nearby if needed. Similarly, other parts of our adjacent New Horizons Massachusetts assisted living community are ideal for those who need some level of assistance with their daily responsibilities.

Superb home-cooked meals perhaps do the most for our fine reputation, because the exquisite dining rooms just always seem to become the center of everyone's attention. Meadows residents may take daily breakfast or gourmet dinner, or both. There is no assigned seating and your guests are welcome at all times. Meal quality, variety, nutrition and overall appeal become extraordinarily important as we enjoy our later years. There are typically three dinner choices each evening.

All Meadows apartments for seniors in Massachusetts are fully private, with very nice oversized bathrooms, generous full kitchens, and lots of large windows. There is abundant free parking for all, and a very efficient private bus which many residents use for their local-area shopping trips, etc. Of course, many services may also be brought "to the door" for those residents who wish. Local firms like Dominos' and Papa Ginos', for instance, come into The Meadows retirement homes in Massachusetts just like they come to every other neighborhood in town.

All units are serviced with full telephone, cable, and Internet capability. There is a special office on-site for visiting physicians, visiting on-site dental care and other professionals. New Horizons also enjoys a "preferred provider" arrangement with Marlborough Hospital / U. Mass Medical Center. Onsite emergency response licensed nurse services are also available to Meadows residents through our certified home health agency, Care Solutions, Inc. Care Solutions additionally offers a wellness library in The Meadows and operates the In Motion Spa and Fitness center on-site.

Traditional monthly activities are available, with special emphasis on health and fitness in a state of the art on-site health club. There is also a network of walking trails through the adjacent woodlands. All residents of The Meadows are also guaranteed priority access to New Horizons' comprehensive continuum of care if the need should arise.

Enjoy a unique combination of independent living arrangements with ready access to a wide variety of medical and social services if they are ever needed. Through constant attention to the needs of its residents, The Meadows' fine, experienced staff provides warm and comfortable homes for those who can live independently, and the nearby availability of extra personalized support for those who may later need assistance. Residents may select exactly the program that is right for them.

Often, a critical issue faced by a new resident is a sense of lost familiarity and independence -- and uncertainty about whether these vital aspects of living will ever be regained.

With that in mind, New Horizons built a home for all residents. No two apartments are identical. A "cookie cutter" approach would have lessened that individuality. Indeed, a real start-up marketing challenge was obliging the visitor who asked to see "all the different types of apartments available." There were just so many then, and there is still a very nice selection available.

The Meadows does not advertise extravagant furnishings, or an overly formal or exclusive image. Yes, this is a beautiful, well-adapted community with comprehensive amenities, but people are paramount. We focus on each resident's happiness and comfort, in ways they remember from their own unique pasts.

The Meadows retirement apartments in MA are characterized by their overwhelming charm - much like that found in a cozy New England country inn.  Set on 40 gorgeous acres, the entire community is infused with a pleasant calm and friendliness. For many of our residents, The Meadows is not just a new home; it is a new way of life, and a better way of living.

All Meadows units have their own independently controlled heating and air conditioning systems, with heavily insulated walls. All of the new Meadows apartments earned the "Energy Star" award in 2003 sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Many units have balconies or patios opening to our quaint country campus surrounded by more than 100 acres of prime conservation land. Grazing deer are frequent visitors from the abutting woodlands.

To aid in providing a quick response in the event of an emergency, a receptionist is scheduled at New Horizon's front desk 24 hours a day, and there is an operations manager on-site seven days a week. At least one Licensed or Registered Nurse is scheduled on-campus, 24-hours, every day, in addition to various other round the clock staff in the adjacent buildings of New Horizons.

In 1993 Cummings Properties Marlborough, Inc. purchased the entire campus of the former Madonna Hall School for Girls from the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. New Horizons Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) opened in 1994. The facility was completely renovated and substantially enlarged, adding many special features and amenities to foster convenience, comfort, and aesthetic appeal.

Although New Horizons is fully private, not-for-profit, and entirely nondenominational, it is one of few retirement communities anywhere to offer both daily Catholic Mass, in our own beautiful 140-seat chapel, and regular on-site Protestant and Jewish services as well.  Many Jewish residents enjoy their Friday evening meal together as part of New Horizons' weekly Shabbat observance. Click here for an extensive group of unsolicited and very revealing comments received from residents and from family members.

The Meadows retirement apartments for Boston area seniors consist of two four-story buildings and three smaller buildings. They have a total of 159 oversized apartments for fully independent seniors, opened in 2002. Unlike most similar size buildings, which tend to be wood-framed construction, the two larger Meadows buildings are both steel-framed, with all poured-concrete floors. Most of the remaining New Horizons buildings have completely fireproof poured-concrete construction throughout, including their roofs. All buildings are fully sprinklered as well.

Meadows buildings are easy to get around, and all residents have access to an elegant indoor walking path inside New Horizons. Five times around the interior carpeted hallway of the "hex" is one mile!

Also available, adjacent to this remarkable country campus, are two separate specialized facilities; one for residents living with Alzheimer's disease, and the other for residents with mental health concerns, such as anxiety or depression. Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, Inc. serves 44 residents with a variety of dementia related issues, while Robbie's Place, operated by Care Solutions, Inc., accommodates 22 residents facing mental health issues. Priority access is available for residents in The Meadows apartments or in New Horizons who may later need the care offered by either program.

The large majority of Meadows residents have their own automobiles and drive regularly, but many also use the New Horizons bus for downtown Marlborough shopping trips, etc. Busy Bee Transportation is also a popular and low-cost option for seniors wanting to take a break from driving.

This delightful Boston area assisted living community, which first opened in September, 1994, is affiliated with the highly successful Cummings Properties organization of Woburn, Massachusetts. The entire campus is owned by Cummings Foundation, Inc., a private operating foundation with a charitable mission.

In a major feature story on Sunday April 28, 2002, Metrowest Daily News wrote glowingly about The Meadows. CNC Real Estate Editor Susan Brickman described the place as feeling "more like a big, friendly club, with a formal lobby opening to a turned staircase, a gas fireplace with a marble surround in the lobby sitting area, and large one-and-two-bedroom apartments that are all unique."

Brickman went on to write of the friendly atmosphere of The Meadows and its residents: "The camaraderie, the laughter, the uninterrupted chattering of the residents in the dining room was proof enough [of that]." Very few of the residents knew any other residents before moving in to The Meadows, but friendships there tend to develop very quickly.

John O'Reilly, formerly of The Meadows, told the paper he was one of the first residents in the first Meadows building. "I went out with my daughter who wanted to get me out of her house," he quipped, "and we had three places in mind. But we didn't get any further than here. We liked what we saw."

"It's still a secret," he added, "its too good to spoil. And where else can I go and have this many women around me?," O'Reilly concluded with a grin.

The Meadows is located on 40 acres of rolling meadows and woodlands, and is surrounded by deeded conservation land. Abundant animal-life, including wild turkeys, foxes and deer frequent the property. The Meadows is a rental community with no endowment, and typically no occupancy commitment beyond two full months.

For those over age 65, who are fully independent in all respects, consider "The Meadows." This fine 159 unit supplement to the continuum of care at New Horizons offers units from 900 to more than 1,950 square feet in two large buildings, and three smaller buildings, directly adjacent to New Horizons. The Meadows "cottages" program reserves 24 apartments for residents who are at least 62 years of age at move-in. Exceptions to the age requirements are made for persons with a physical disability, and for one of two residents sharing an apartment.

The Meadows, at 370 Hemenway Street, Marlborough, MA, is located just off US Route 20 at the end of Wilson Street. It is 13 miles west of Route 128 (Interstate 95) and, about halfway between downtown Boston and east Worcester.

Both New Horizons are strictly not-for-profit communities owned by Cummings Foundation, a $1.2 billion net worth charitable foundation, founded in 1986 by William S. and Joyce M. Cummings. New Horizons in Marlborough has grown steadily under the same Executive Director since before its opening in 1992.
